Living rooms are large and prominent spaces that often define the theme of our homes. To arrange furniture here in a way which is both practical and aesthetic can be a daunting task. Worry not, for interior decorators have tackled this problem for years and Creatalog has done its homework to come up with 5 easy-to-follow tips that can make the quest to decorate your living spaces a walk in the park.

1. Arrange your furniture around a focal point

In a space as big and open as a living room, it is vital to choose a focal point to build your furniture arrangement around. Many rooms have a natural focal point, like large windows or an accent wall. In such cases, it is best to arrange the furniture around. Once a focal point is established, avoid changing it. If the room has no natural focus, media appliances like TVs or music systems with wide credenzas or just a side table displaying an artistic piece can make excellent artificial focal points.

2. Create Conversation Areas

Most of the conversations in a house happen in the living spaces. Therefore, it is vital to place furniture such that it is convenient to converse here. A coffee table, side table, credenza or a similar surface should be at an arm’s reach from all seats. One shouldn’t have to get up to grab a drink or a snack. Sofas shouldn’t be too far apart. Maximum distance between any two seats should be adjusted such that a normal conversation is clearly audible to everyone without the speaker having to raise their voice beyond the natural level.

3. Ensure adequate traffic flow in the living space

People should be able to walk around the room and around the furniture comfortably, even when the sofas and chairs are occupied. Leave adequate movement space but try to keep the entire setting as close as possible without sacrificing comfort. Remember, you want to decorate the living room and keep an intimate setting without hindering traffic.

4. Don’t touch the backs of your furniture to the walls

A common mistake made by a large number of people attempting to arrange their furniture in their living spaces. Pulling furniture away from the walls creates a more intimate setting. Furniture pieces mostly come with finished and decorated backs, and there is no need to hide it. Leaving a little bit of space between the furniture and the walls also makes cleaning easier and prevents both the walls and furniture from the damage caused by constant contact.

5. Place the right amount of supporting furniture

Side tables, credenzas, shelves - to name a few - are excellent supporting furniture vital to any living room. After the initial core placement of sofas, coffee table and chairs is done, make sure to surround them with plenty of functional and aesthetic support pieces. A credenza under the TV, a shelf showcasing your show-pieces on the wall or a simple side table for a vase goes a long way towards enhancing the aesthetic of your living space. However, be mindful to adhere primarily to the main focal point and the theme of the living room as you decorate.
