The idea of having large, open floor plans is charming, considering all the possibilities a large living room provides. It is often tempting to divide the large living room into a conversation area and a dining area. However, arranging the furniture such that the combo takes off can be quite a challenge. Both living spaces and dining spaces tend to have large footprint, catchy furniture that can often fight for attention. Creatalog brings you five tips to help you blend in these two prominent features of your home into a perfectly designed living room dining room combo

1. Sofa set and the Dining table don’t have to be matching

Instead of designing the living-dining combo feel like a large space cramped with a lot of furniture of one theme, divide the room into living spaces and dining spaces. Let both the spaces have their own design style and decoration, hence creating two different spaces without a wall. Matching all the furniture may make your living room feel monotonous. However certain design styles, like the white-heavy modern, matching might work but generally it is a better idea to get living room furniture in light, calming hues and dining to contrast it in dark, heavy tones.

2. Separate focal points for both parts

For living spaces, a TV set, a fireplace or a large window make excellent focal points. Try to arrange your sofas and coffee tables to design the conversation spaces around these foci. In the dining room, the big and obvious focus is the dining table. Get a table that is adequate for the entire family, with space for at least two guests on demand, while keeping it as small as you can without sacrificing functionality. Small tables create an atmosphere of intimacy and help circulation.

3. Create a soft separator between living spaces and dining spaces

If you want a clear definition between both the spaces, use furniture as separators. For maximum divide, tall shelves are the best choice. A folding shoji will grant privacy of a drywall while adding a unique flavour to your room. For softer divide, credenzas or short shelves make perfect choices and are easy to install and decorate. If you don’t want to add extra furniture for the divide, simply make the widest sofa face away from the dining table. This creates a natural border between the dining and living spaces.

4. Accessorize and decorate your Furniture

Decorate your dining space by throwing bright colored or patterned rugs under your dining and coffee tables making the furniture stand out. Decorate your furniture with contrasting upholstery to create magic. In addition, if you line up your dividing shelf with glass bottles it can create a subtle indication to the start of the dining room.

5. Final touch through Suitable Lighting

Highlight both the focal points with appropriate lighting. Generally, conversation areas should have soft, warm shades of subtle light. Enough for reading but not strenuous to the eye. Dining room can have more aggressive lighting focused mainly on the table.
