Whether you have a well-loved piece of interior furniture with upholstery in bad shape, or you've got a hand-me-down piece of furniture for a great price but not-so-great design patterns, you can completely renovate the look of your furniture through reupholstering. Here is a step-wise process to help you bring your old furniture back to life with a new, trendy upholstery that will last the test of time and decorate your living room perfectly put together by Creatalog .

1. Pick your furniture wisely

Changing upholstery of a piece of furniture is an extensive and time consuming process. You want to pick sturdy, high quality furniture with exceptional design. The best way is to choose pieces made of solid wood instead of plywood or cheap, brittle wood as they’re easier to renovate and can last for a long time thereafter. Scan the furniture for any broken or worn down parts before you begin, to assess the viability of the process.

2. Get your tools ready.

You’ll need the following to renovate your furniture -

1. A prying tool. The best would be a flat-head screwdriver or a butter knife.

2. Pliers and a hammer to deal with the nails.

3. A stapler with adequate supply of staples (Make sure the staples are big enough to accomodate the upholstery).

4. Sewing supplies to modify the cloth as required.

5. Designer supplies to decorate after finishing.

3. Start by removing your current fabric

The best way is to use the screwdriver and pliers to pull out any nails or rivets holding the fabric to the wood. Take care to not tear the fabric to use it as a reference to cut new fabric. Remove any interior foam/stuffing that might be there. To renovate the furniture, you can either use the same foam/stuffing or invest into new fillers.

4. Clean and Fix the furniture.

After removing the interior stuffing/foam and the fabric, the old, dirty underside of the used furniture will be exposed. Take your time to clean up this furniture interior properly and clean thoroughly in all possible crevices before adding new materials. If the furniture was damaged, scratched or is just in need of a better polish, this would be the best time for maintenance.

5. Measure, Cut and Sew your new fabric

The best way to go about cutting your new material is to use the old fabric as a reference.. Trace the old fabric shapes onto the new. Use this pattern to cut out all the necessary pieces for the project. Make sure to keep track of which piece goes where on the furniture and sew the fabric only where necessary.

6. Staple and attach the new fabric to the furniture.

Carefully staple one section at a time, lining up your new fabric with its corresponding location on the furniture, under the interior of the foam. Make sure there are no gaps and try to get a smooth finish. The best outcome is achieved when all the designs align with each other.
