Living room is often the most important space in any home. It is where the family gathers to spend time together and connect, and it is where the guests of a house make their first impression of the host. A key aspect of a living room is its furniture and the design style which sets the tone for the house. Hence, it is vital to choose your furniture with utmost thoughtfulness. Here are a few tips to help you with this vital process from Creatalog

1. Measure your room

Based on the size and exact dimensions of your room and your doorway, you can narrow down the furniture choices you have. Measuring the door is important to avoid any damages or complications in bringing the furniture in.

2. Draft a floor plan

This step sounds more complicated than it is. Essentially, what you need to do is to draw a rectangle (or whatever the shape of your living room is) on a paper with scaled dimensions of your room, and draw a rough sketch of where you would like your sofas, corner sofas, tables, side tables, credenzas, TV, fireplace etc. Make a note of the average widths of furniture as you draw.

3. Start with the basics and add extras as space allows

All living rooms generally have a sofa, an armchair (or a corner sofa) and a coffee table. Decide on these before you move on to other add-ons such as TV sets, cadenzas, side tables, etc. Smaller living spaces look better with loveseats instead of sofas. Once you’re done with the basics, look for appropriate side tables for your sofas/loveseats/corner sofas or credenzas to put under your TV sets. Credenzas double as storage/display for other decorations you might want to add to the room.

4. Pick a theme for your living room

There are three base themes to stick to, and made further modifications to. Those are -

1. Contemporary - Suited for rooms with rich hues of red, olives or purples and patterns. Traditional furniture is elegant and comes with elaborate wood carvings, rolled handles, skirted bottoms and similar design styles. Furniture choice will revolve around more grand shelves and credenzas to decorate your room.

2. Modern - Suited for light, bright colors like sky blue or white rooms. Modern furniture adheres to the design style based on light, glossy and sleek often alternative designs.. It incorporates mostly plastic or metal frames with glossy upholstery and spring-based cushioning. Tables often have a glass top on a painted steel frame. Furniture choice will be focus on minimalism and combined pieces like a sofa-cum-bed or a corner sofa.

3. Casual - Suited for rooms with plane, rich hues but not as rich as traditional themes. They’re a cross between modern and contemporary and adhere to a friendly, warm and simplistic furniture style with plenty of curves and simple design styles. Focus on side tables and other convenience-enhancing choices.
